The construction of the new Covered Market (upon removal of an old warehouse) was decided by the municipal administration in order to provide the town community with a multi-purpose building. The building project had to be adaptable to other purposes for collective use. Besides the service and distribution areas it is characterized by a large open space. The area is on ground level gently sloped towards the valley with beautiful views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The section is on two levels: the lower is the sales and services area and the higher level of the square is “the place looking over the retail space and from where you can admire the natural landscape”.The building consist of two simple overlapping boxes: the lower concrete basement (partly below ground level) entirely closed except for the entrance ways leading to the inside of the building from which you can admire the view of the Church and the higher level designed as a smaller mostly glassed box, from which the ‘inside’ of the main space is visible as well as the beautiful view of the Savuto valley and the Tyrrhenian Sea. The structure is built in reinforced concrete, colored plaster, aluminum window frames, the galvanized iron roof is supported by corrugated iron beams, the floors are in cement and thresholds are in the local San Lucido polished stone.
