The design theme of the new house in Rende is inspired by the rural architectural heritage of Calabria, a single clean volume topped by an roof that follows the natural slope of the site. The downstream side has a two-tiered circular balcony that overlooks the mountains of Sila and is crowned by a jagged cornice echoing the “romanella” rural roof motif. The more reserved and introspective long fronts are characterized by vertical glass cuts, by a large stone fireplace and by the curved volume of the entrance way. The interior features a double volume atrium, overlooked by the curved staircase and balcony. The reinforced concrete structure, the ocher stucco, the tufo stone and red aluminum roof are the main materials used.
